John Kalafat integrated clinical, community, and organizational approaches in the development and evaluation of community and school-based prevention and intervention programs. He applied these approaches to a variety of programs in such areas as crisis intervention, youth suicide prevention, school-based family support programs, and management education. Dr. Kalafat has coauthored books on youth suicide prevention and divorce, as well as articles and chapters on youth suicide prevention, crisis intervention, school consultation, and program evaluation. His Lifelines School-Based Youth Suicide Response Program has been designated as an evidence-based program. He was a past president of the American Association of Suicidology, a fellow in the Society for Community Research & Action and Psychotherapy divisions of APA, and member of the Clinical and School Psychology divisions. He was also a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and was on the editorial boards of Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, Journal of Applied School Psychology, Brief Treatment and Crisis Intervention, and Pragmatic Case Studies in Psychotherapy. He held prior positions as Director of a Regional Telephone Crisis Service, a University Counseling Center, and Director of Education & Organizational Development of a medical and community mental health center.
