Components
The programmatic components of the Sport Psychology Concentration at GSAPP
include the following :
- Two core doctoral-level courses:
- Sport Psychology: Theory, Research, Practice (3 credits)---delineation , description, and discussion of current status and future directions of sport psychology in all relevant areas. (offered during each Fall semester-- time to be determined, based on student and instructor constraints)
- Assessment and Intervention in Sport Psychology ( 3 credits)--- focus of
the course in on application of a systematic approach for assessment of athletes
as people, copers, teammates, and performers, and linking assessment results
to intervention programs ( offered during each Spring semester)
- Independent study options--- based on individual needs of students, such
independent study options are available in any area that can be placed within
one of the levels of the conceptual framework.
- Dissertation options--- this may include any relevant topic. In this regard,
several GSAPP dissertations have been completed during the past three years
in the sport psychology area.
- Practica and Related Supervised Field Experiences
- Developed individually with students, based on their specific needs and experience bases.
- Opportunities have been developed within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, Department of Sports Medicine
- Livingston College Counseling Center--Sport Psychology Clinic
- Other--based on student ideas and possible settings
- Guided Self-Assessment (credit to be arranged)--a semester-long, supervised
professional experience in which the student learns about him or herself as
a prospective sport psychologist by engaging in the following tasks:
- Assesses their current strong points and limitations-- mental. emotional, technical-- for sport psychology practice
- Pinpoints goals for their continued development
- Identifies and describes aspects of practice that they find motivating and confident
- Formulates a business plan for the practice of sport psychology
- Sport Psychology Institute
This is a new unit that is part of the Sport Psychology Concentration and the Center for Applied Psychology. The Sport Psychology Institute is devoted to generation of information about sport psychology practice and the provision of educational information to athletes, psychologists, coaches, and others.
